About the Laurier Accounting Association
The accounting students produced by the Wilfrid Laurier University School of Business and Economics are among some of the brightest in Canada. In 2006, our BBA co-ops had a first-time writer UFE pass rate of 92.3% with non co-ops close behind at 90.6%. In that year, a Laurier grad also achieved the highest mark on the CMA Case Examination, as well another Laurier grad took the national and provincial gold medals for the UFE.
Since 1993, Laurier grads have taken away six provincial and four national UFE gold medals its pretty obvious that our accounting students succeed in the industry. It is the mission of the Laurier Accounting Association (LAA) to contribute to the success of these students by acting as their link to the industry while at the University. In the past the LAA hosted CA Night (an annual event designed for students to network with larger firms) and a variety of socials.
This year however, the LAA is making leaps and bounds: hosting a new networking event for our 2nd year co-ops in November and a charity tax clinic in February. It is also my mandate this year to provide our students with a more eclectic view of public accounting, and as a result we have taken on more mid and small-sized firms in addition to the nationals. We are also undertaking a variety of initiatives this year to aid both our members and firms in the recruitment process such as business cards, recruitment packages and many more marketing opportunities. Bottom line: the Association links people together from industry professionals to other students in the classroom.
